What is a doula and the benefits of having one

A doula is a professional trained to provide emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. The benefits of having a doula include a potentially safer, more memorable, and empowering birthing experience. Doulas complement the clinical care provided by midwives and doctors and do not replace it. Whether you’re looking for continuous support, a trusted birth partner, or personalized care, a doula can be a valuable addition to your birth team.

As your doula, I offer continuous support throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth, providing both physical and emotional assistance. I help enhance the well-being of mothers by reducing anxiety and stress, increasing self-esteem and self-reliance, and advocating for their needs. My presence can lead to a more positive birth outcome and a better overall birthing experience.

Reduced Medical Interventions, research shows that with doula support, there’s a lower likelihood of having an assisted birth, a cesarean section, or needing pain relief during labour.

Shorter Labour, evidence suggests that doula-supported births are associated with shorter labour times.

Improved Birth Outcomes, doula support is linked to increased rates of vaginal birth and lower risk of cesarean or instrumental birth.

Emotional and Practical Support, doulas offer emotional reassurance and practical help, such as assisting with breastfeeding and providing guidance on baby care.

Enhanced Parental Confidence, postnatal doulas support new parents, helping them gain confidence in caring for their baby.

Health and Wellbeing, evidence indicate that doula support improves both the experience of giving birth and the baby’s as well as mother’s health and wellbeing shortly after birth.

Ultimately, a doula can be a valuable addition to your birth team, offering personalized care and support tailored to your needs and preferences.

Pregnancy and Birth

The day your baby is born is an unforgettable moment etched into your memory. It’s a day filled with a whirlwind of emotions, from anticipation to joy, and sometimes even fear. The act of bringing forth life can instill a sense of strength, accomplishment, and connection to generations of women who have done the same. Birth is an empowering event, one that also reveals vulnerability. It's a time when the birthing person draws on their inner strength and support network. As your birth doula, I will stand by your side, offering understanding and support with every breath you take on your journey into motherhood.

Pregnancy and Birth Doula

Postnatal doula

As a postnatal doula I provide valuable support to families in the months after childbirth.

Tasks and Services include household assistance, I help around the house, prepare meals, and assist with light housework.

Infant Care, I support parents in caring for their newborn, including feeding, soothing, and ensuring the baby’s well-being.

Emotional Support, I provide a listening ear, encourage parents, and help them navigate the challenges of early parenthood.

Remember, a doula does not replace medical professionals but complements their care by offering emotional and practical support during this transformative time.

Overnight Doula

Research indicates that it is normal for babies to be awake at night as they have not yet developed the ability to differentiate between day and night. This can pose a challenge for adults who have established circadian rhythms.

As an overnight doula, my role is to provide exclusive care for the baby. Upon request, I feed, change, and soothe the baby, and maintain records of feeding and nappy changes. Parents can get answers to their daily questions about their baby from an experienced caregiver. You can trust that your baby is in safe hands, allowing you to sleep peacefully knowing they are being tenderly looked after.

Sleep is crucial for recovery, enabling the mother to regain her strength and well-being more quickly. Assistance with breastfeeding reduces anxiety and minimizes the time the mother needs to be awake. When everyone has had sufficient sleep, the whole family is happier.

There is no set minimum requirement, so you can choose as many or as few nights as necessary.

Breastfeeding may be a natural process, but it also presents its own set of challenges. Should you choose to breastfeed and find yourself in need of support, I am currently training with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers to assist you on your journey.

The expertise I've acquired from breastfeeding my three children for over three and a half years is priceless. It's knowledge that I will always have and one that I utilize to support other mothers.

Yoni Steam

The term 'Yoni' signifies a stylized representation of female genitalia in Hinduism, symbolizing generative power and the goddess Shakti. In Sanskrit, it translates to 'abode,' 'source,' 'womb,' 'sacred space,' or 'vagina.' Yoni steaming, a practice prevalent in ancient indigenous cultures across Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America, is linked to wellness and feminine identity. This traditional postpartum practice is experiencing a resurgence in contemporary lifestyles.
